Strolling through the neighborhood recently, I came across this beauty:
I was able to ask the store clerk for the plant’s name, and let me tell you, it’s awesome. Anyone else know it?
Let’s make it interesting — if you think you know the name of this plant, leave your guess in the comments. If anyone comes up with the right answer, I’ll send you a little something crazy from Tokyo. Sorry, it won’t be this plant, because it was expensive. Consider that your first hint.
If a whole few of you get it right, I’ll come up with some sort of random drawing to select a winner. Let’s say you have until Thursday morning-ish, USA time (that’s Thursday evening-ish Japan time). Good luck!
it looks like the tomato-esque nipple plant. i think it has another name too (and probably something even more terrifying in japanese), but that’s the name i’ve heard.
Damn it, Wifey beat me to it. So far as I know, it’s the nipple fruit, which also is known as — I swear I’m not making this up — the titty fruit. It’s not edible, and I think it might actually be poisonous.
Looks like the same plant, but that’s not the Japanese name for it (no surprise!). Keep guessing!
Oooh! The Fox Face!
gah! i was just about to say fox face!
In South America it’s called a cow’s udder, and I think it’s poisonous…you’ve been warned.
Good to know! No licking the cow teets, got it.
I found this out recently, too. Hrm, were we together when we saw it?!
It looks like the little tomatoes that mom/grandma grew when your dad & I were kids. But the wrong end is attached to a stem. I admit I tried to google, but alas could not figure it out. My best guess is that it is an orchid species.
Kitsune gao?
I’ll let a few more guesses roll in before I declare a winner… I’m having fun! Anyone else?!
